"It was 1970 when a group of guys decided to start a fashion group that would represent who they are and where they come from. These guys were popular in their neighbourhood and they had the money to buy expensive clothes but these guys were a working class group.
They called themselves AmaDamara, AmaDamara become popular for their fashion statement and the everybody wanted to be a Damara  so the guys decided to start a neighbourhood dress up competition and it became a success and it also gave them an opportunity to put their name on the map as the best dressed people in Soweto and so the trend went all over Soweto, but now it was neighbourhood against neighbourhood and it became the most popular competition in Soweto and everybody wanted to show that their neighbourhood is the best neighbourhood when it comes to fashion.
The neighbourhood that won would be crowned the Most Fashionable Kasi and they would be respected around Soweto but other Kasi's would want to take the crown and would set up challenges on the side to try and get the crown from the champions. AmaDamara were respected for their fashion style and they always came up with different style mixing it with their original look to make it look more fashionable. "
